April 1994, Rwanda. Jean has just celebrated his seventh birthday when he witnesses the massacre, by his neighbors and friends, of his family and all the Tutsis in his village. Hidden in an attic, enslaved by one of the men who killed his family, taken for dead and loaded into a truck carrying the bodies of other Tutsis, Jean is no less determined to live and uses his imagination as a bulwark against pain and madness. His meeting with Espérance, a Hutu girl who goes to hide him, gives him the strength he needs to get to Kigali to try to escape Rwanda.
